Laser Hair Removal

Unwanted hair can be removed with laser light utilizing the principle of Selective Photothermolysis. This means that the pigment of the hair fiber itself will selectively absorb the light energy and the heat from that energy will destroy the hair follicle from which the hair grows. Therefore, laser hair removal works best on patients with dark hair (which absorbs the light energy) and light skin (where there is no pigment to compete with and absorb the light energy which could cause unwanted skin injury). Patients with darker skin can be successfully and safely treated with modified laser settings.

The FDA defines permanent hair reduction as hair that does not grow back within a 12 month period, and laser hair removal works only on hair that is in the growth phase. Since only a portion of the hair is in the growth phase at any one time, multiple treatments are required to eradicate all unwanted hair.

Hair removal can be accomplished with different laser types or IPL (intense pulse light). We researched the different lasers and IPL with regards to which is the superior system. We concluded that the Diode Laser (light wavelength 800 nm) is the most effective laser to remove unwanted hair. It is the laser to which all other lasers and IPL compare their results. The Light Shear Diode laser is FDA-approved for all skin types, including the darkest skin types. Since we have an IPL and a Nd:YAG laser available for laser hair removal, our advocacy of the Diode Laser is not based upon convenience but conviction. We did our homework and we invite you to do yours.
